1&1 Hosting

Got more then 4 name servers listed on your domains? Maybe you're paying for a high availability DNS service... Well DON'T use 1&1 Hosting because they will remove your domains hosted by them after 30 days because their system cannot handle more then 4 name servers.   Let's say your using them for web hosting ONLY and want them to do nothing with DNS for your domains. Well regardless of what you want, they will still check your domains hosted by them for DNS records. If you have more then 4 name servers listed on your domains, their system will email you repeatedly informing you that your domains are misconfigured. Best yet, there's no way to turn off this "feature", so after 30 days your domains are removed.   What a awesome web hosting company... right?! After talking with multiple members of their support team it'll be clear to you too...

Generating a InstallShield log file

There is a simple way to generate a InstallShield log file, where you will be able to view exactly what InstallShield is doing. Advantage of this log file is that you are able to see where all the files are being extracted to and which switches are being used on each individual files. You simply use the /debuglog parameter from a command prompt after the InstallShield executable.   [crayon-5a156ea592ada143071668/]   Using this switch will generate a "InstallShield.log" file in the same directing as the InstallShield executable that was executed.

HTML Meta Refresh

For those of you that are looking for a clean way to redirect without using another language (ie JavaScript, PHP, Pearl, ColdFusion). This way you don't have to reply on the end user having a special language installed. You can use a HTML Meta Refresh but just know that the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) discourages it's use because the "back" button in some cases will not work (takes you back to the redirect, redirecting you to back again).   [crayon-5a156ea593182969329010/]   You can change the refresh time by changing the content="0 to something like content="5 for 5 seconds waiting until the redirect happens.

PeerGuardian 2

First off let me say I do not condone copyright infringement but I am big on security and privacy. This app offers that, so that is why I am mentioning it. PeerGuardian 2 is not fool proof but it does offer decent protection of your P2P privacy. To me, what you download (legally of course) in the privacy of your own home is your business and yours alone! Basically this app is a running blacklist that is continuously being updated of networks that you do not want connecting to your home network. When one of these blacklisted networks tries to connect to your home network, PeerGuardian 2 simply drops that those packets and moves on. Like mentioned before it is not fool proof, if one of those blacklisted networks changes it’s external network IP address and this new IP address has not been added to the blacklist yet. Then you run the...

HTML 5: Could it kill Flash and Silverlight

While Adobe, Microsoft, and Sun duke it out with proprietary technologies for implementing multimedia on the Web, HTML 5 has the potential to eat these vendors' lunches, offering Web experiences based on an industry standard. In fact, one expressed goal of the standard is to move the Web away from proprietary technologies such as Flash, Silverlight, and JavaFX. “It would be a terrible step backward if humanity's major development platform [the Web] was controlled by a single vendor the way that previous platforms such as Windows have been”, says HTML 5 co-editor Ian Hickson, a Google employee.

Favorite apps right now

I am always talking about the newest and greatest applications that I have found lately and thought it was time I make a list of them as of today. Hope you guys enjoy this list and stay tuned for more discoveries. 1. Dropbox for backup and synchronization between multiple computers 2. Foxmarks plugin for Firefox to sync bookmarks and passwords 3. TrueCrypt for data encryption 4. PortableApps to get around those pesky IT admin limitations 5. GnuPG an open source replacement to PGP 6. FireGPG plugin for Firefox to use GnuPG with Gmail Dropbox: Dropbox is great for securely backing up our files and sharing them between multiple computers and users with different OS's. I have found this to be a exceptional solution for backing up my family members files without them even knowing how it works. For example remapping the "My Documents" to their "My Dropbox" folder, you just need to move the "My Dropbox" folder to somewhere outside of "My Documents"...
